Community Links has been commissioned by Devon Carers to provide a short respite service for carers. We are looking for volunteers who can sit with the carer’s loved one, enabling the carer to have a break – to meet a friend for a cuppa, go for a walk,  or pop out to run an errand. The service will cover the area north of Okehampton up to Torridge. A Time for You service is available in Okehampton provided by Age UK Okehampton.

Unpaid carers are often isolated, lonely and find it very difficult to get out. Can you help give them a much needed break by sitting with their loved one?

Volunteers will go into the carer’s home and stay with the client whilst the carer has a break. Volunteer tasks may include making a cup of tea, having a chat, reading the newspaper or just sitting with the client. Any practical help given will be very light with no lifting involved and no expectation that personal care tasks will be undertaken. Volunteers will receive training and support from our Befriending and Inclusion Coordinator, Jean Daniel. There will also be opportunities to meet other volunteers at training and social events. Expenses will be paid.

We are starting our recruitment and training now, in the hope that we will be ready to start to deliver the service as soon as Covid-19 restrictions lift. Carers will have been even more isolated during this time, so please if you can spare one or two hours either on a regular or an ad hoc basis, do get in touch. You will be making a difference to the well-being of a carer.
